Membership Basics

Q: What does the full .Mac membership include?

Your .Mac membership gives you 10 GB of online email and file storage, as well as instant access to everything you need to extend your Mac experience to the Internet:
- Web Galley for sharing photos and movies (requires iLife '08)
- Website hosting with iWeb (included with iLife '06 or later)
- IMAP Mail and webmail
- Groups
- Sync
- iDisk storage
- Backup
You can share photos and movies online, send and receive email, publish your own website or blog, sync and back up important data, and more. Setting up your account on your Mac takes just a few seconds, so you can make full use of .Mac right away.

Q: What does the .Mac Family Pack include?

The .Mac Family Pack includes a master account with all the great features mentioned above, including 10 GB of online storageplus four sub-accounts for family members. Each sub-account gets its own email address, 2.5 GB of online storage for email and files, and full access to .Mac services. You also get a dedicated iDisk folder for sharing files between family members. The master account administers the sub-accounts and membership can only be renewed through the master account.

Q: If I have purchased the .Mac Family Pack membership, how do I set up the sub-accounts?

Go to www.mac.com and click Account. On the Account page, click Manage Accounts. To create a new sub-account, click Set Up Account and provide the requested information. You can also convert an expired .Mac accountor an existing .Mac trial or email-only sub-accountto a Family Pack sub-account. Enter the member name and password for the account you wish to convert, choose Family Pack Sub-account from the drop-down menu, and click Convert.

Q: Once I have set up my Family Pack sub-accounts, how do we share files between our accounts?

All members of your Family Pack, and only members of your Family Pack, have access to a Shared folder that's located in the iDisk of each account. Any Family Pack member can drop files into the Shared folder and has full read/write access to the files in it. The Shared folder counts toward the storage quota for the Family Pack master account only.

Q: If I am a current .Mac member, can I upgrade to the .Mac Family Pack?

Yes. You can upgrade your individual .Mac membership to a Family Pack at the rate of $80.00 per year. You will only be charged for the time remaining in your membership year. To upgrade, log into your Account at www.mac.com, click Buy More, and choose Upgrade in the Family Pack drop-down menu. The amount you owe for the upgrade will appear in the Total section.

If your individual .Mac account is about to expire, you can sign up for a Family Pack at the time you renew. Your .Mac Family Pack settings will take effect the first day of your new subscription year.

Q: What does the .Mac free 60-day trial include?

Trial members get full access to all of the great features of .Mac, including Web Gallery, email plus webmail, and one-click web publishing from iWeb. Trial accounts receive 100 MB of email and file storage on iDisk and a trial version of .Mac Backup software, letting you back up as much as 100 MB of data.

You can share photos and movies online, create a website or blog, sync bookmarks and contacts across multiple Macs, and moreabsolutely free for 60 days. And when you become a full .Mac member, you can keep the same member name, email address, and everything you've created, and your online storage limit automatically increases to the full 10 GB. To take advantage of personal domain name support, you must be a full member.

Q: Does .Mac include Internet Service Provider (ISP) services?

No, but a .Mac membership does require Internet access. A broadband connection is recommended.

Q: Is .Mac available to Microsoft Windows users?

Yes, Windows users can sign up for a .Mac trial or a full .Mac membership. .Mac Mail, .Mac Groups, Address Book, Bookmarks, iDisk, and Support can be used on a Windows machine, but certain applications, such as Backup, are only available on a Mac.

Q: Is .Mac available worldwide?

.Mac services are available for customers worldwide in English, French, German, and Japaneseand are supported only in those languages. European customers can subscribe to .Mac with an international credit card. Transactions are billed according to your country. Only certain currencies are supported. Q: Which web browsers are supported?

.Mac requires the use of a modern web browser. For Mac users, we recommend the latest versions of Safari or Firefox. For PC users, we recommend the latest versions of Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Q: Can I continue to use my .Mac Mail address as an AIM or iChat screen name after my .Mac trial or paid account has expired?

Yes. Your screen name will remain valid.

Q: Is .Mac Sync included with Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger?

Yes. .Mac Sync can be set up through System Preferences in Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.

Q: Can I sync if I have not upgraded to Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger?

If you are using Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS v10.3.9, you can use iSync to sync your Safari bookmarks, Address Book contacts, and iCal calendars between your Mac computers. You can also use iSync to sync your bookmarks and contacts to your .Mac Bookmarks and Address Book. If iSync was not pre-installed on your Mac, you can download it from the Apple Support website.

Using .Mac with iLife '08

Q: Do I need iLife '08?

If you want to take advantage of the latest features of iLife '08, including Web Gallery and support for personal domains, you will need to purchase iLife '08. However, the features in iLife '06 will continue to work if you choose not to upgrade.

Q: What happens to my Photocasts when I upgrade to iPhoto '08?

iPhoto '08 replaces Photocasting with a new way to share photosyour .Mac Web Gallery. You can continue publishing your existing Photocast albums, but you can't create new ones in iPhoto '08.

Q: Can I convert my Photocast into a published album in my Web Gallery?

Yes. To convert your Photocast album into a published album in your .Mac Web Gallery, select a published album in iPhoto '08. In the iPhoto toolbar, click Unpublish. This button will then change to a Web Gallery button. Click Web Gallery, review your publishing options, and click Publish. Your Photocast is now an album in your Web Gallery.

Q: How do I use a personal domain name with my iWeb site?

To publish your iWeb site to a personal domain, you must first acquire a domain name. .Mac does not sell domain names, but they can be easily purchased from a wide variety of companies for very reasonable annual prices. A simple Google search for domain registrar will give you numerous choices.

Once you own a domain, you can configure .Mac to host it and enable iWeb's one-click publishing directly to your new domain name. To configure .Mac, choose Set Up Personal Domain from the iWeb File menu, or go to your .Mac account settings, choose Personal Domain and follow the basic instructions on the site. You will need to tell .Mac the name of your domain and then edit the domain settings on your registrar's site to define web.mac.com as the alias, or CNAME, for your domain.

Once you have completed the process, iWeb will begin publishing to your new domain within 48 hoursusually much lessdepending on the responsiveness of your registrar.

Renewing your .Mac Membership

Q: How do I renew my .Mac membership?

If you are set to auto-renew (check the Credit Card Info page in your Account settings), you will receive a message about 30 days before your anniversary date informing you that your account will renew automatically with the credit card you provided. If you are not set to auto-renew, you will get a series of messages before your anniversary date with instructions on how to renew your account. You will be directed to the .Mac site where you can enter your credit card information or, if you purchased a .Mac box, an activation key. Your credit card will not be charged until your renewal date.

Q: Can I use a .Mac box to renew my .Mac membership?

Yes. Go to www.mac.com/activate, enter your member name and password and the activation code from the .Mac box, and follow the instructions. You will only need a credit card if you have purchased .Mac add-ons such as additional email accounts or storage space, or wish to add them for your next year.

Q: How early prior to expiration can I set my .Mac account to renew?

At any point during the year, you can set your account to auto-renew by updating your credit card information and checking the auto-renew button on the Credit Card Info page in your Account Settings. You will not be charged until your renewal date. If you prefer to renew manually or use an activation code from a .Mac box, you can set your .Mac account to renew up to 60 days prior to your anniversary date.

Q: How do I turn off auto-renewal and cancel my .Mac membership?

To cancel your .Mac membership for the upcoming year, go to Account and click Credit Card Info. Uncheck the Auto-Renew checkbox and click Submit. The main Account page will then show that your account is set to expire on your anniversary date. Your credit card will not be charged for the following year, and you will receive a notice on your anniversary date that your account has expired.

Q: Can I renew my .Mac membership using the .Mac Family Pack box?

Yes. You will be able to renew your Family Pack membership if you purchase the .Mac Family Pack box. At renewal time, go to www.mac.com/activate and enter the activation key from the Family Pack box. After you complete that renewal process, you will be able to set up your new .Mac Family Pack sub-accounts by logging into Account at www.mac.com.

Creating Email-Only Accounts

Q: How do I purchase and set up an email-only .Mac account?

If you have a full .Mac membership, you can purchase up to ten email-only accounts (with 512 MB of storage each). You can give an email-only account a brand new address or you can use the name of an expired account or a .Mac trial account.

To purchase additional email-only accounts, go to www.mac.com and click Account. On the Account page, click Buy More. Select the number of additional email-only accounts you'd like to purchase, then click Continue. Next, review your billing information, click Continue, confirm your purchase, and click Buy Now.

To assign the email-only account to the name of an expired account or existing trial account, click the Manage Accounts button. Enter the member name and password of the account you want to convert, then click Convert. Please note that if a trial account is converted to an email-only account, all the account's data files, except for email messages, will be removed from Apple's servers. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, Bookmarks, Mac-to-Mac syncing, and Backup, are not accessible to email-only accounts. Also, the photo signature feature is not available for email-only accounts.

Upgrading .Mac Mail and iDisk Storage

Q: Can I upgrade my .Mac Mail or iDisk storage space?

If you are a full .Mac member, you can upgrade your online storage to 20 GB, with 200GB of monthly data transfer, for an additional 49.95 USD*. Need more space? You can upgrade to 30 GB, with 300GB of monthly data transfer, for 99.95 USD*

Q: Can I purchase additional email-only accounts?

You can also purchase up to 10 additional email-only accounts. Additional .Mac Mail accounts include 512 MB of storage and cost 10 USD* per year. It is not possible to purchase additional storage for email-only accounts.

Q: Is technical support included in the .Mac membership?

All members have access to the .Mac Support site. There you'll find information about the top support issues for .Mac software and online services, frequently asked questions, community discussion boards, and the AppleCare Knowledge Base. If you need further help, you can reach customer service representatives directly via e-mail-based forms. Support experts will reply to your request within 24 hours.

Data Preservation

Q: If my .Mac account expires, what happens to my data?

If you have a full or trial .Mac account or a Family Pack sub-account, all webpages, files on your iDisk, messages left on the .Mac Mail server, online Address Book contact information, and .Mac Bookmarks will be removed. Emails sent to your .Mac address will bounce back to the sender. If you own any .Mac Groups, group pages will no longer be accessible or visible to group members, and messages sent to the group email address will bounce back to the sender.
